Fire Clean up in San Gabriel CA

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Knowing the Obstacles of Restoration, SERVPRO Professionals will professionally asses and guide you though the process of post fire restoration.

Property inspections help our team to see where immediate action is necessary. Identifying the type of smoke and soil damage in this inspection can ensure the right tools are available for mitigation and cleanup.

What Types of Smoke Damage Exist After Combustion?

The materials burned before clean up begins can directly impact the residues involved and the composition of soils that threaten the household. Some include:

  • Wet Smoke – Wet smoke damage is often among the most challenging, as it is thick and cannot be cleaned with chem sponges or traditional cleaning measures.
  • Dry Smoke – High heat fires that do not leave many partially combusted materials can create dry smoke damage. This looks like a chalky film on surfaces that can often be wiped clean.
  • Oil/Puffback Damage – With many area residences running furnaces that use oil as fuel, puff back damage is not uncommon. These micro explosions in your duct network can leave surfaces coated in stringy soot.
  • Protein Residues – These are common to see after kitchen/grease fires. Protein Residue  can be thick and challenging to remove and carry a powerful odor with them that spreads.

Understanding the type of fire and smoke damage in your home after a disaster can be critical in identifying the best cleaning and restoration approach. SERVPRO of San Gabriel team can help with efficient cleaning solutions based on the composition of soils. Give us a call today at 626-478-0286

Fire clean up, Los Angeles County

SERVPRO Provides Fire Damage Restoration Services in San Gabriel and Temple City, CA

Anyone who has ever suffered from a fire on their property knows that it can be devastating and create quite a mess. The flames, of course, can torch anything it comes into contact with, and the smoke released can also cause problems. Smoke can travel to areas in your home far away from the fire's source and leave behind soot residues.

Our SERVPRO technicians often spend a good portion of their time cleaning soot residues from your contents and building materials during  fire damage in Los Angeles County. Since the various types of smoke can cause different issues, we have an array of chemicals and cleaning methods we use during the remediation process.

We Can Offer Several Services to Return Your Home to its Pre-damaged State

  • Content Cleaning
  • Smoke Remediation
  • Fire Damage Debris Removal
  • Fire Cleanup
  • Fire & Water Damage Restorations
  • Structural Deodorization

When cleaning soot residues from your contents and building materials, some of the cleaning procedures work by chemically altering the soot residues. When our SERVPRO technicians use strong acids, bleaching, enzyme digestion, or oxidizing, chemical changes occur that help us remove the soils. Enzymes are living organisms that digest soot made from protein like burnt food. The enzymes turn the soot particles into soluble molecules that can be cleaned using detergents, water, or ammonia solutions.

When cleaning soot residues from the surfaces of items in your house, we can use two types of bleaching agents. Oxidizing bleaches add oxygen to a soil that changes its chemical structure and breaks it down. Reducing bleaches (or strippers) work the opposite and can neutralize the effects of an oxidizing agent.

If you ever notice soot residues on your walls or furniture after a fire, call us at 626-478-0286

House Flood Cleaning

Flood Damage in San Gabriel, CA can Overwhelm be costly if Swift Restoration Action is not taken.

The impact of flooding is often overwhelming to homes in the path of rushing water or rising water bodies. With how rapidly properties can be consumed in this disaster, having the right restoration response can be vital. We determine the immediate needs of your house to overcome several of the hazards, and threats the property might endure.

Structural Damages and Vulnerabilities

One of the initial concerns regarding flood damage in San Gabriel homes is the structure's condition. Flooding finds ways into the property, which can ultimately take small vulnerabilities in your home's construction and expand them rapidly to be significant breaches in the property's envelope. Some commonly affected areas of the house include:

  • Foundations
  • Basements
  • Attics
  • Roofs

Safety Hazards

When water begins to pool within the home, several hazards exist. Not only must homeowners be cautious and mindful of the debris and matter brought in with the flooding, but excessive pooling and deep waters can be impacted by live electricity or feature live creatures and undesirable pests brought in with the surge.

Health Effects and Contamination Concerns

Natural flooding is treated like a blackwater event since the possibilities of contamination cannot be ruled out. Exposed materials and items are treated as contaminated, and we prioritize thorough cleaning and restoration practices when possible to overcome this.

Standing Water Damages

There is little productive work that can be done to overcome the harsh effects of an active flood damage event without managing the standing water first. We utilize multiple extractors capable of heavy water output and handling possible solids and debris, such as trash pumps and truck-mount extractors.

Water and flood damage can be significantly destructive events for homes and businesses. Emergency services help limit the loss and protect the property, and our team can get these actions started as soon as we arrive. Call today at 626-478-0286

Commercial Flooding in Los Angeles

If you had a water loss at your business or home, but do not see any visible water or puddles your not alone!

Many customers feel their business or home is unaffected by water because they cant see any visible water or they feel since they cleaned the water away nothing is wet! Sometimes customers even use their hands to determine if surfaces or walls are wet, but feel nothing and automatically assume the area is dry!  It would be wonderful if our hands was that magical!

In the restoration industry we have special devices called moisture meters and thermal cameras that show our technicians if something is wet or has elevated moisture levels present.  The meters and thermal cameras are non-invasive and can easily be used to determine if materials in businesses or homes are affected by water.  The meters are also used throughout a drying process to show when the materials are dried and back to acceptable levels!

For more information on wet materials and the drying process give SERVPRO of San Gabriel call at 626-478-0286

Sewage clean up in San Gabriel CA

Sewage clean up in San Gabriel Valley,

Broken pipes are one of the leading causes of water destruction in homes, and nearly every homeowner will experience a pipe burst or leak at some point.

Every home contains numerous pipes that can burst or break, including sewage pipes and sinks’ pipes, which can be located in the basement, interior or exterior walls, underground or ceilings. Regardless of where the pipe is found, it’s crucial to fix broken pipes quickly to prevent water damage and mildew or mold growth.

Broken or damaged pipes aren’t always obvious. Most pipes burst or leak without warning, and it can be days, weeks or even months before you notice the signs of a damaged pipe. However, once you do spot a leaking or broken pipe, it’s critical to act fast.

A broken pipe that isn’t immediately repaired can become a disastrous problem. Leaking water may damage your property and belongings, and your furniture, appliances, carpets, rugs and even clothes can be ruined in a broken pipe accident. Water seepage that’s left attended can also promote the growth of  bacteria and mold in these damp environments.

My house smells bad!

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Moisture or dampness

Sometimes, moisture can get underneath the carpet and carpet pad, leading to musty odors.

This moisture can come from humidity, spills or potted plants that drip onto the carpeting.

A flood can also cause carpet odor, such as when a finished basement floods during a rainstorm.

If not addressed properly, continued moisture exposure can cause mold and mildew to grow under the carpet padding.

Pet odor

When pets use the carpet as a bathroom, the smell can really linger.

Even after a carpet cleaning, the smell of pet urine may return. This is due to the gases released by the bacteria that are digesting the urine. If any of the urine remains in the rug fibers, it will continue to smell.

The same is true for vomit, another common problem associated with pets and carpeting.

These bacteria are activated by water, which is why the smell may intensify after a thorough cleaning.

Dry carpet cleaning treatments or treatments that use enzymatic odor removal products are the best solution for eliminating pet smells. Enzymes are particularly effective because they attack the bacteria, thus eliminating the source of the smell.

Cigarette smoke

If a smoker lives in the home, the carpet can collect the cigarette smoke odor.

While the homeowners may not notice the stench because they live with it, visitors or someone who purchases the home will definitely notice the smoke smell.

A professional carpet cleaner may be able to remove the smell, but if the smoking was excessive, a carpet deodorizer may not be enough, and the carpeting may need to be replaced.

Food and drink spills

Food and drinks that spill onto carpet can lead to odors.

Like pet smells, these organic products attract bacteria. As the bacteria break down, they release smelly gasses. Again, professional carpet cleaning is the best solution to remove the smell.

Call us let us help you get your home smelling like new! 626-478-0286

As a renter how can you protect yourself from storm losses

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

First of all, renters should strongly consider getting renters insurance policy. Often the same company you use for your auto insurance can provide a quote and coverage for renters insurance. Also, offering a multi line discount.

However, beware flood insurance is not usually included in a standard property policy.  You have to add it. Flood insurance can be purchased as a separate policy that has a 30 day waiting period before coverage begins.

As a renter or tenant you are usually responsible for a insurance policy that covers personal possessions and loss of use. The landlord usually is not responsible and will not pay to relocate you if the home or apartment you rent can not be lived in do to a loss.

Residential landlords are usually responsible for insurance for the property itself; the structure only.

Please look into getting coverage. Most people are surprised how much the cost is to relocate much less getting new furniture and clothes if there is a divesting fire. Make sure you buy the right amount of coverage as well.

What is Black Water

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

If a flood comes to your California home you may wonder how safe it is to wade into the water.

Water loss are classified into these three categories:

• Clean
• Gray
• Black

Each of these types of water carries different risks. Clean water is typically safe for human consumption. Gray water has been used since its last filtering but has not encountered contaminates.

The third categorization can be more concerning   to people and animals. Unless and until an authority declares the flood water as clean, you should assume it is black water. Learn precisely what that means below:

What Is It?

The classification of water as “black” means that it has come into contact with elements such as raw sewage. This rating means the water may contain all kinds of microbes.

Why Is Flood Water Classified This Way?

When water enters your home after heavy rains, it’s not just water from the sky. Water damage also comes from overflowing sewage. That sewage can mix with the rainwater and contaminate everything it touches.

What Should Homeowners Do?

If you have water in your home after a storm, do not wade into it unless doing so is necessary. It is also important to dry out the area as soon as possible. That water can spread disease and cause mold growth.

It’s essential to call the experts at SERVPRO of San Gabriel as quickly as possible after water damage or flooding occurs.

California Wildfires

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

In California we seldom experience storms. We do experience long periods of draught and strong Santa Ana Wind. Our storm season is Fire Season.  In recent years, we have experienced the smoke, ash, and flames from The Gap Fire, The Jesusita Fire, The Tea Fire, and The Thomas Fire.  Historically, there have been many other wildfires in our town as nature exerts its powerful forces.

We have to assume that in the future, wildfires will continue to be a problem for us here in California. Strong winds and low relative humidity have been major contributors to wildfires across California.

Personal safety is always the primary concern in these situations, the first several days after the fire is under control is the critical time to preventing secondary damages from smoke and soot.

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Brush vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpet.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances with light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • Wash house plants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

DON’T:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV sets, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water. They may have been contaminated.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Even if your property didn’t suffer fire damage, there could be soot particles and residues left to clean up. If not cleaned properly, the odor and effects can linger long after the fire has been put out.

Fire Risks from Space Heaters

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

It is reported that there are about 25,000 residential fires a year in the United States from the use of space heaters in the home.

Space heaters should be setup at least a three feet away from any thing that can catch fire such as furniture, boxes, paper or other combustible items. Check your space heater equipment often and clean it regularly.

If you have any doubt replace it. New space heaters have more safety features then old ones.  It is a good idea to unplugged the space heater  whenever not in use or when you leave your home.

Cleaning your space heater can be done by blowing compressed air throughout the inside and vents to get rid of dust and debris that may accumulate and wiping down where you can.  You may need to remove the front cover to do so.

A good source for safety information regarding space heaters is ESFi  (The Electrical Safety Foundation International)

Tips That Can Help You Protect Your Business

Mold can do serious damage to your San Gabriel, CA, business if it goes unchecked. Keeping a few preventative tips in mind can help you protect your business, employees and valued customers.

1. Monitor Humidity Levels
Mold growth tends to increase in humid areas, such as restrooms and in the employee kitchen. Mold does not require sunlight to grow or spread, it can grow unchecked until the odor it releases alerts you to the problem and by then, the growth could be quite large. Monitor and control humidity levels throughout your building and use ceiling or standing fans to prevent high humidity levels.

2. Do Not Delay Flood Repair
Water damage tends to occur most often during incidents of flooding. something as simple as a water line break in the employee fridge. Despite the degree of damage, putting off repairs could lead to serious mold issues. If flooding is severe, you need to call SERVPRO of San Gabriel.

3. Store Documents Properly
One way to practice mold prevention is to store paper documents and records in a way that does not encourage fungi growth. Choose air-tight plastic containers with lids that snap down so moisture cannot affect the documents or hire a digitizing service to transfer paper records onto a cloud storage server. This can help you save space and reduce the risk of mold growth in your building’s basement or ground-floor storage room.
Water damage and high humidity levels can cause serious mold issues at your San Gabriel, CA business. Knowing how to prevent its encroachment may help you protect your business and avoid costly repairs that might come with water damage.

What Requires Cleaning During Fire Restoration in San Gabriel, CA?

5/31/2022 (Permalink)

Post Fire restoration Call SERVPRO of San Gabriel

Cleaning is a typical restoration task after a fire incident. Although many people know this, many do not appreciate the full extent of cleaning work needed to restore the house to its preloss state. It is easy to underestimate the resources needed for the task.

Most of the cleaning effort during properties is likely to be expended on the removal of smoke residues. Such residues accumulate on uncovered surfaces such as walls and ceilings and hidden areas such as wall cavities and cabinet interiors. Hidden sections are likely to have more residues since convection currents tend to move smoke towards colder areas of the structure.

Before starting restorative cleaning We offer services such as:

  • Content cleaning using regular and specialized methods such as ultrasonic cleaning
  • Removal of materials such as insulation since cleaning them is not cost-effective.
  • Surface cleaning using diverse methods including vacuuming, wet cleaning, or even soda blasting

SERVPRO of San Gabriel handles cleaning tasks regularly during fire restoration. Call us whenever you need assistance at (626)-478-0286

Fire Season is here

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

As the weather becomes warmer and drier, the chances of a home fire increases as well.  It’s important to do a good preventative check around the house, to remove broken appliances, correct outlets with too much plugged in, and worn down wires.  Even with such preventative measures.

If a Fire Starts:

  • Use a fire extinguisher. Practicing with your family on the proper use of one ahead of time could make a huge difference, in saving lives, damage to the home, and money.
  • If the fire catches on your person (clothes, etc.) STOP, DROP, AND ROLL.
  • If the fire is uncontrollable, get out of the house immediately, and call 9-1-1. Do not go back to gather any belongings.
  • Important to use stairs, not an elevator, during a fire. A fire can cause the electricity to go out in a building.  The elevator quarry can fill up quickly with smoke.
  • If you are trapped inside, close doors around you, placing wet towels at the bottom of the door, call 9-1-1, and tell the operator where you are located.

Water damage in my home

12/21/2021 (Permalink)

Severe weather is usually one of the first things that comes to mind when many think of water damage.

Yes, storms and flooding can cause catastrophic water damage, but they are often not the main culprits. Various items in your home can also be responsible for creating many situations that result in water damage.

<h4damage-is-a-common-homeowners-insurance-claim

Water damage was the third most common reason for a homeowners insurance claim between 2011 and 2015, and is something many homeowners will face with an average payout per claim of $8,861.

However, there are a differences between water damage and gradual water damage, which can impact insurance claims. Examples of gradual damage are situations where something has been happening over time, such as plumbing issues in the walls causing damage to walls, ceilings or floors, or water damage caused by cracks in the foundation. Unfortunately, most gradual water damage claims are not usually covered by homeowners insurance, while storm-related water damage usually is.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the leading causes of water damage are:

  • Plumbing supply system failures. This would involve frozen pipes that can burst due to a buildup in water pressure caused by freezing water or when the supply system building materials fail, resulting in a leaking or burst pipe. Per IBHS, plumbing supply system failures lead the pack for residential water damage losses, and an average claim will cost approximately $5,092 per incident after the deductible. It was also found that homes in the 16 to 40 years of age range made up a larger group of supply system material failure claims.

  • Plumbing drain system failures. This type of occurrence happens when a sewer drain backs up and overflows into a home or from the integrity of the materials used in the system. In their study, IBHS found that 52% of drain system failures were caused by sewer backups and 37% were related to material performance issues. It is interesting to note that they also found that the average drain system failure had higher loss claim dollar amounts in southern states than in northern states.

  • Toilet failures. Toilets are the second highest source of residential water damage loss after plumbing supply system failures, and this type of damage can be the result of faulty fill valves or clogged drain lines. Toilet failures on the first floor of a home had more severe homeowners insurance claims than those in basements or upper floors, according the study conducted by IBHS.

  • Water heater failures. If your water heater has reached its life expectancy, rust and corrosion will start to deteriorate the tank, which can create leaking or bursting issues. IBHS noted that 69% of all water heater failures resulted from a slow leak or sudden burst of water lines and, on average, cost $4,444 per incident following the deductible.

  • Washing machine failures. As a general rule, washing machine failures can be caused by supply hose failures, machines overflowing and drain line failures. Washing machines are one of the top 10 sources of residential water losses, and per IBHS, supply hose failures accounted for over half of all washing machine-related losses.

If your home has experienced any water damage, the team at SERVPRO of San Gabriel is always available 247 to help with cleanup and restoration and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Hidden Cause of Water Damage

10/14/2021 (Permalink)

What happened?

A common cause of Kitchen water leaks is the plastic water line behind the refrigerator. Those lines will crack, a slow drip begins and water pools behind the fridge unnoticed. Another common cause is excess condensation buildup which has the same effect. Water damage from your fridge can cause problems in your home if left unchecked. The problem can go unnoticed for so long, at this point the damage has already taken a toll on your floors and surrounding areas. Moisture and heat in the dark environment create perfect conditions for mold to form and your floorboards to rot. Somewhere like an apartment or enclosed area these mold spores can cause issues and a problem like this should not be overlooked. Over at SERVPRO San Gabriel we are experts in mold remediation and will gladly remove and prevent further frustrations for you.

What to do?

It is important to first clean up any visible water to avoid further damage and possibilities of mold occurring. Once this is done you should inspect your fridge and see if there are any noticeable leaks or areas where condensation may be forming to excess. It is important to replace any faulty connections to stop the immediate leak if possible. If you are able to, assess the damage done to the area under and around the fridge. Most of the time floorboards will show visible damage, but the real problems can occur underneath where you cannot see.

Tip:   a water alarm behind/under your fridge to catch any further problems from getting worst.

Questions You n Need Ask Yourself as You Make Sure Your Home Is Protected

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

You don't think much about the fire alarms in your home in until they start chirping or go off when you burn toast. These alarms are vital to protecting you and your family from a fire, though. Whether it's alerting you to a life-threatening blaze or reducing the amount of fire damage from an unnoticed kitchen flare-up, your home's fire alarms are vital to helping you avoid heartache.

1. Do You Have Enough?
You should have at least one fire alarm on every floor of your home, plus one in each bedroom and one outside every sleeping area. Inspect your home to make sure you have the right number, and consider adding additional units.

2. Do They Work?
Chirping alarms ensure that you're replacing the batteries regularly, but you'll also need to replace your fire alarm unit entirely every 8-10 years or so since their sensors eventually wear out. Sometimes the units will alert you of this, but often you'll just need to keep track of when they were installed.

3. Are They Effective?
In addition to making sure that your fire alarms are functional, it's important to know that they are effective. For example, there are two different types of smoke detectors: One that picks up on hot blazes (an ionization alarm) and one that warns you about smoky, smaller fires (a photoelectric alarm). To make sure that you're covered for both types of fires, make sure you have both types of alarms installed throughout your home or alarms that detect both.
Although a fire alarm can't prevent a fire or prevent the need to clean up from smoke damage.

Time! Fire alarms give you and your family the critical time needed to escape from a fire.

Installing a Security Fence and Other Steps To Take After a Commercial Fire

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

A security fence can keep vandals away from your San Gabriel, CA commercial building after a fire

Security Fencing For Your Building After a Fire

The aftermath of a commercial fire can seem overwhelming. You have to survey your building for possible smoke damage. You also have to start the cleanup process.

Many businesses also install a security fence following a fire or other disaster. It is easy to forget about this step. After all, you have so many other things to do to get your business back up and running.
Yet fencing is essential after an emergency. You need some form of security in place to prevent additional damage from:

  • Vandalism
  • Weather
  • Theft

Insurance

While fencing may be costly, refusing to secure your premises could be more expensive. That’s because your insurance company may not cover water damage or other harm that results from your failure to protect your building. Besides putting up a fence, you may also want to cover any holes in the walls or roof.

Additional Steps
Once your security fence is in place, you can work with the insurer to start your rebuild. Make a list of any damaged items to show to the insurance company. Be sure to include the date you purchased each asset and how much you paid for it. Do not throw anything away without taking pictures of it first.

You also need to get the insurance provider's permission before hiring a fire damage cleanup company. Otherwise, the insurer may not cover the costs of this service.
While you wait for the experts to arrive, you should open windows or turn on a fan to keep the air circulating in the building.

A security fence can keep vandals away from your Temple City CA, commercial building after a fire. It can also prevent thieves from stealing your assets. Installing proper fencing is thus a key part of the disaster recovery process.

Understanding Basement Flooding

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

What to do when your basement floods?

While instincts tell you to panic at the sight of pooled water inside your home, try to keep calm.

The most important thing to remember is to never enter a flooded area when the power is on.

Start with these steps:
1.Shut off electricity and gas to the area. If you’re not sure how, call an electrician or SERVPRO, who can get someone out to you right away.
2.Try to determine the source of the water. Excessive rainfall or a burst pipe are two top reasons why your basement may flood.
3.If safe to proceed, and while wearing protective gear like boots, gloves and a mask, enter the water to investigate the source further. If your basement has a drain and you can safely navigate to it, check to see if it is clogged.
4.Time to get that water out of there. Depending on the amount of water, this may be as simple as using towels, a mop, or a wet vacuum. If the flooding is more extensive, a sump pump is necessary. Once the bulk of the water has been removed, soak up all remaining moisture with towels.
5.Assess damage. Remove any items, like furniture, that appear damaged by the water and move them to a space where they can dry. If the drying process on items is taking longer than a couple days, unfortunately, they may not be able to be salvaged. Any items that were within boxes should be removed to air out, and all items should be monitored for mildew growth.
6.Get the air moving in the basement to dry it out. Open windows and doors, and use fans placed around the space to inspire quick drying of the flooded area. If you have a dehumidifier, move it to the basement to aid the drying process.

How to prevent your basement from flooding?

It’s easy to look back at the cause of a flooded basement and see where things went wrong, but what about preventing flooding before it occurs? There are some measures you can take today to help waterproof your basement and safeguard it against a catastrophic flooding episode.

-Keep your rain gutters clean, and make sure they’re pointed away from the foundation of your home.
-During the next heavy rain, check around your yard to see where water is pooling and being diverted to. If it’s going toward the foundation of your home, contact an expert to grade your yard so it’s able to properly handle the water it receives during storms.
-If you have a basement window, make sure it’s protected with a window well cover.
-A sump pump can be your basement’s savior. An automatic sump pump set to trigger on when it senses water in your basement space offers a layer of protection for your home, even when you’re not there. Homeowners in particularly flood-prone areas should have a backup sump pump, and check to see if flood insurance is available for purchase.

When to call for help with basement flooding:

Calling a professional for help with a flooded basement is always a good idea, especially if the amount of water is more than a foot deep, many items have become wet, or mildew is beginning to take hold. Quickly removing the water and beginning the drying process is essential to lessen the possibility for mold to form, which can greatly increase the damage and cost involved.

We have the experience, qualifications and knowledge needed to help you quickly deal with a flooded basement cleanup, because we handle these types of jobs all the time. Let us deal with the stress and get your basement back in working order.

Give us a call 1-800-SERVPRO or locate an office near you to get help with your water cleanup. We’ll take the worry for you.

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

Many challenges due to the COVID-19 Pandemic have faced businesses over the course of last year unforeseen and challenging. From closures, temporary closures, mandates, employee changes, financial stressors......all were unexpected and even chaotic at times.

Unfortunately, difficult times led to empty buildings, some for longer periods than others. Without the quick response of people, issues can become big problems quickly. Even the smallest leak can cause problems that shock businesses ready to reopen. Water damage and mold can cause serious time delays in getting back to business, most especially in food and beverage establishments.

SERVPRO of San Gabriel and it’s experienced trained team of experts can handle almost any job. Simply by dialing 626-478-0286, any business can be assured that it can offer a clean and healthy atmosphere for its employees. Getting businesses back in business is OUR business!!!

Commercial Storm Damage Services Are Vital to Any Business

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

When Storms cause damage to a business, regardless of size, the business can suffer significantly until the damage is repaired. First, the initial damage, which can include broken windows, soaked flooring and furniture, damaged walls and more, can be unsightly if not unsafe for both customers and employees. In many cases, businesses have to shut down fully or partially until the damage is assessed and repaired. In addition to the cost of repairs and lost business, productivity can suffer significantly even if the business remains open. The sooner a business can get fully restored and up to speed, the less costly the storm damage is to the company’s bottom line overall.

Why commercial storm damage presents a unique challenge to restoration specialists

Storm damage to commercial properties present a unique challenge to restoration specialists. Unlike residential properties, commercial properties may not be able to vacate the premises while restoration work is being done in order to keep the business up and running. Also, depending on the size of the business building itself, the restoration process can be on a much larger scale, especially those commercial building with multiple floors. Oftentimes, heavy or expensive commercial equipment has suffered from storm damage and needs to be restored or removed. And of course, while storm damage is never convenient for either a homeowner or a commercial property owner, commercial storm damage can be significantly more costly as more time goes on until the damage is repaired. With SERVPRO of San Gabriel's 24-hour emergency service, we can be faster to any disaster.

The timeline for water damage on commercial properties

Water damage restoration specialists understand the timeline of water damage and the costs associated. Within minutes of storm damage, water can spread quickly and cause damage to flooring, furniture, walls, equipment and more. Within 24 hours, drywall can swell, materials start to break down, and a musty odor can form. After 48 hours, windows and doors can swell, paint blisters and wood floors can warp. If damage is left unaddressed any longer than a week, significant mold damage can set it, greatly increasing costs to businesses. There are many major employers in Los Angeles but large or small, water damage can be costly to a company.

Why business need to work with a commercial restoration specialist

Unfortunately, most companies don’t seek out commercial storm damage services until they need one and by then, the clock is ticking. Ideally, companies should identify a company that specializes in commercial storm damage restoration and other related services so they’re prepared should disaster strike. If your company is seeking a commercial restoration company as part of their emergency ready plan, contact SERVPRO of San Gabriel at (626) 478-0286

What Should I Do if a Fire Burns My San Gabriel, CA Ceiling and Attic?

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

For Fire Damage Mitigation Inside Your in San Gabriel, CA Call SERVPRO

Once flames light up inside your San Gabriel home, the heat will rise, and the blaze will start torching your building materials that are above the initial source. Commonly, an inferno can engulf the components that make up your ceiling, attic, and roof.

How can you tell what materials will have to be removed and what can be saved?

During every fire damage project in San Gabriel, whether or not your structural components will have to be removed and replaced depends on how severely the item got burnt and how deep the charring went. Our SERVPRO technicians can conduct a thorough inspection of your building and determine which items we think we can save through sanding or sandblasting, refinishing, cleaning, and sealing. When the flames have consumed sections of your ceiling and made their way into your attic, we inspect the following building materials for issues:

    •    Acoustic Ceiling Tiles and Drywall- In most cases, if your ceiling tiles or drywall got anything more than just surface charring, the materials must be removed. In this case, we can remove just the burnt pieces of your ceiling and dispose of them in sealed plastic bags. If other parts of your sealing are coated in soot residues, then we can clean them with dry sponges or wet cleaning techniques.
    •    Insulation- If the insulation inside your attic got burned during the fire, in most cases, it must get removed. If your insulation is just smoke-damaged, it can be deodorized, but it is usually more cost-effective to remove and replace it.
    •    Trusses- When determining whether we can save your affected roof trusses or not, we follow the general quarter inch rule. If the charring is less than a quarter-inch deep, then we can sand down or sandblast the charring off. As a final step, we can then apply a specialized sealant paint to your entire attic to seal in any foul odors.

Fire Safety Tips for Your Business

4/15/2021 (Permalink)

As a business owner, there are plenty of safety considerations to address regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors. One of the things you need to spend a little extra time planning for and working toward is fire prevention.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) listed in order:

  1. Cooking equipment, 29% of fires
  2. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, 12% of fires
  3. Heating equipment, 11% of fires
  4. Intentional, 10% of fires
  5. Smoking materials, 9% of fires
  6. Exposure, 4% of fires
  7. Electronic, office or entertainment equipment, 3% of fires

From those cases, three of them—intentional, exposure, and electrical distribution and lighting equipment—accounted for 20%, 18% and 15%, respectively, of the most property damage.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2007, fires and explosions accounted for 3% of all workplace fatalities.

In taking a looking at more recent numbers, the NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year, which were responsible for an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage.

Tips for Protecting Your Business

What can you, as a business owner, do to protect your business from the risk of fires?

First, you must assess your risk for fire by identifying hazards. In some areas, the local government may even offer a visit from a fire marshal to help identify these risks and provide guidance on your fire prevention plan.

You’ll want to make sure that the right fire protection equipment is in place. This includes an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on each floor.

Finally, work on creating a fire plan and reviewing it with your staff. That way you’ll be making sure everyone knows what to do and how to stay safe in the event of a fire. Conduct fire drills at least once a year to keep the fire safety protocol fresh, and take time to review evacuation plans and the location of your first-aid kits.

Despite best efforts with fire prevention and safety tips, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO® of San Gabriel is the team to call.

2. Inspection and fire damage assessment. As the team arrives, they will inspect and test adjoining rooms of the property to determine the extent of fire, smoke and soot damage. This helps us determine the right plan of action moving forward.

3. Immediate board-up and roof-tarp service. There’s a pretty good possibility your window, walls and roofs will be compromised by fire damage, so we will make sure that your property is secure and protected from further damage by boarding up missing windows and walls and placing a tarp on damaged roofs.

4. Water removal and drying (if water damage is present). Since water damage is a byproduct of fire damage, we immediately begin the removal process for all wet items. Dehumidifiers and air movers are brought in to remove the remaining water and finish up the drying process.

5. Removal of smoke and soot from all surfaces. Through the use of specialized equipment and techniques, we are able to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls and other surfaces.

6. Cleaning and sanitizing. When possible, we will clean your restorable items and structures. Not only will they be cleaned, but industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment are used to help remove odors.

7. Restoration. The final step in getting your property back to pre-fire condition is restoration. This can include minor repairs like replacing drywall, painting and installing new carpet, as well as possible major repairs like reconstruction of damaged areas.

Remember, if you need us, we’ll be there—no matter the time or day. The team of highly trained restoration experts at SERVPRO® of San Gabriel is available for emergency cleanup and restoration services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Waterproof your Home! Know the Types of Water Leaks San Gabriel, CA Homeowners Experience?

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technicians Deal with All Types of Water Leaks

Leaks are one of the most expensive types of damage that can happen to a home, but also one of the least detected. Leaks can weaken structures, waste water, dissolve building materials, create dangerous compounds, and foster mold growth. These are some of the most common leaks we encounter

Pipe Leaks

Pipe leaks, in cabinets, behind walls, or anywhere else, are one of the most common sources of SERVPRO San Gabriel. Pipes are often deliberately placed out of view of occupants, so when one develops a leak, it can be a very long time before anyone notices.

Sink, Shower, and Tub Leaks

These leaks are often much more sudden and much more noticeable than a pipe leak because they are usually caused by the resident . As such, they have less potential for long-term water damage.

Water Tanks and Heaters

When water heaters or tanks leak, the damage is fortunately usually contained mostly to the container itself rather than immediate surroundings. However, large volumes of water are contained in them regardless, and if the entire contents leak out in an area, they may cause severe damage to surrounding objects and materials.

Technicians from SERVPRO of San Gabriel are trained extensively in water damage restoration of all kinds, and we feel confident we can handle any water disaster you have. Call us 24/7 at (626)478-0286 for emergency services or a quote.

Why Flood Cuts Are Made During Restoration

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Why Should Flood Cuts Need To Be Performed?

Flood cuts serve several important functions inside a commercial structure that has recently been flooded. Restoration professionals may recommend cutting into drywall 12 to 18 inches above the flood line to identify and remove contaminated building materials and promote drying prior to restoration.

Remove Contaminated Materials
Flood cuts make it easier for restoration professionals to check the condition of several materials in walls. The following substances may need to be torn out and replaced:

  • Drywall
  • Insulation
  • Structural components

A flood cut is a way to tear out damaged materials, provide access behind walls for repairs and increase airflow. This measure is most important when damage that involves contaminated water has occurred.

Speed Up Drying Behind Walls
Flood cuts open up the walls of commercial buildings that have recently been exposed to flooding. If water has saturated drywall or worked its way behind walls in other ways, it can be difficult to promote fast drying without making significant cuts. If the water involved in damage is not contaminated, it may be possible to save walls by drilling small holes behind the baseboard and inserting hoses to circulate air behind walls.

Clear the Way for Rebuilding
Removing damaged drywall and wet insulation lays the groundwork for rebuilding. Once a structure has been cleaned and disinfected to get rid of sources of contamination and then dried thoroughly, the restoration process is ready to proceed.

Commercial building owners and managers who are not sure whether to make flood cuts should seek the expert opinion of damage restoration professionals who specialize in flooding. These specialists can determine the right height for a flood cut to check conditions behind walls, tear out contaminated building materials and speed up drying at a commercial property located in San Gabriel, CA

Does your fire extinguisher work?

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

One of the best safeguards against a residential or commercial fire is a well placed and fully charged fire extinguisher.  Keep in mind that different types of fires require different fire extinguishers to put them out.  The following facts can help you determine which is the right extinguisher for you.

Type- A

The first type of fire extinguisher is the “A” classification, this means that it is effective against ordinary fuels.  A typical house fire in a garbage can or debris pile uses this type.  A water-based extinguisher will usually only be rated for this type of fire.

Type- B

Oil-based fires fit into the class “B” type of extinguisher.  It is important to not use a water filled extinguisher on an oil fire, as it can cause the fire to spread while the flaming oil moves on top of the water.

Type-C

Class “C” involves combustible fumes, those include fumes from gasoline or aerosols. Foam, carbon dioxide and power-based extinguishers are the most common types of extinguishers rated to deal with this type of fire.

Extinguishers rated to put out an electrical fire is also a “C” rated and is essential for putting out this type of fire.  Most foam and powder type of extinguishers can put out an electrical fire, this type of extinguisher will coat the burning material surface preventing oxygen from reaching the burning components.  If an electrical fire gets out of hand the area should be abandoned immediately.

Remember most small extinguishers are for single use only.  Larger extinguishers with a capacity gauge can be refilled and used multiple times. Many extinguishers are rated to be used on multiple types of fires, so be sure and choose the one that is right for you.

If a fire does strike your business or home, remember that SERVPRO of San Gabriel at.  626-478-0286.

Storms in California

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Hurricanes tend to get the most coverage, they are actually only one of ten common storm types in the United States. Other storms include tornadoes, floods, snow storms, hail storm, thunderstorms, lightning storms, tropical storms, ice storms and Derecho storms.

Have you heard of a Derecho storm before? They occur when many large storms create a single giant storm –one that can reach speeds of 58 miles per hour and cover 250 miles.

Because hurricanes cause so much damage, it’s important to be knowledgeable about them even if they aren’t common to California.

The winds that accompany hurricanes are connected to all types of damage. In many cases, the wind is strong enough to form tornadoes. Wind speed can often range between 74 - 155 miles per hour, more than strong enough to cause severe wreckage. Even the sturdiest of structures, like trees, are in danger from wind this strong. Storm winds are powerful enough to hoist up and fling debris of all sizes, causing further destruction.

Storm Surge Damage

Have you heard of a supposed “wall of water” caused by hurricanes? This so-called wall is actually called storm surge. As hurricanes rage toward land, the winds push water with it and disrupt the normal tide flow. So much water is pushed toward the shore that it amasses high above predicted tide levels and then surges onto shore and farther inland. As the water surges inland, it has nowhere to drain and thus causes flooding. Storm surge creates strong currents and carries heavy weight, causing damage wherever it goes.

Flood Damage

As mentioned, storm surge is the primary reason for flooding events during a hurricane. But storm surge happens mainly on the coast. Hurricanes can cause floods as far out as 100 miles from landfall. Hurricanes are so powerful that they affect other weather systems, creating excess precipitation in areas that aren’t prepared. Because the excess rainwater cannot drain, floods occur.

Storm damage, whether caused by hurricanes or flood or otherwise, can be very serious and

Are you prepared?

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know that weather changes are increasing the likelihood of floods? Yes, even in areas where excess water is usually considered to be unlikely. But as long as there is rain, there is a chance for flooding, too.

Technically speaking, a flood has occurred when two or more acres are wholly or partially subsumed with water.

But if a flood does happen, you won’t be spending your time worrying about the legal definition. You’ll be rightly worried about survival. Keep reading this blog for tips about flood preparation - and don’t worry, none of them include building an ark.

You need a generator in an emergency

It’s impossible to know if power lines will survive during a flood, or if any of the usual electric resources will still be available. There are different variables that will influence the type of generator that you need.

Did you know: water conducts electricity. And of course, flooding means lots of excess water. If you know that flooding is impending, you should move all appliances to higher ground for safety.

You need to know the flood risk

You can check with local government or FEMA websites to become familiar with the level of flood risk in your area. The knowledge of when floods are more likely to happen and what is likely to cause them helps you be prepared. For the San Gabriel area, you can start here.

Another good way to stay aware of the risk is to purchase a weather radio and become familiar with how to use it properly.

You need an emergency kit

Have you prepped an emergency preparedness kit? And is it prepared for a flood? The emergency kit should have extra water as flooding can contaminate water sources, and place important documents in a waterproof case, and always include extra food supplies. For help packing an emergency kit, read this.

You need to know how to evacuate

Evacuation is a two-fold process. Begin by researching your local government’s official evacuation plan. After that, you should create an evacuation plan for your family that also includes emergency modes of communication. You should practice this evacuation plan until every person is familiar with the route.

Finally, once all of the floor waters have receded, you’ll want a plan in place for clean up. SERVPRO® of San Gabriel is always ready to help.

Increased Threats of Severe Weather

If we stop and take a look at natural catastrophe losses in the U.S. for 2017, severe thunderstorms were the most common cause and produced some of the costliest results. Out of 50 events, there were 85 fatalities and an estimated total of $25.4 billion in overall losses.

With these storms, we have the threat of flooding, high winds and even tornadoes if the conditions are right. It has been found that in modern history, 10% of all violent tornadoes have occurred in March, with April, May and June taking the top spots at 30%, 24% and 15% respectively.

Prepare Your Family for the Unexpected Weather

While weather forecasters may not be able to predict the weather with 100% accuracy, they do have the tools available to forewarn us of impending severe weather. Advanced warnings, along with the right preparation, can greatly improve overall safety for your family.

Take a look at some of the things you can do to your home to prepare for the chance of severe weather:

  1. Clear out your home’s gutters, drains and downspouts.
  2. Trim trees of precarious limbs or branches that could break off in a storm.
  3. Secure or store outdoor belongings if severe weather is in the forecast.

Having an emergency kit on hand is always advised. These kits should include the following:

  • Battery-operated flashlight and NOAA weather radio, with extra batteries for both
  • Emergency evacuation or shelter plans
  • Important personal info, like telephone numbers of neighbors, family and friends, insurance and property info, numbers for the utility companies, and medical info
  • A first-aid kit with things like non-latex gloves, adhesive bandages, tweezers, sterile gauze pads, aspirin packets, adhesive cloth tape and scissors
  • 3–5 day supply of bottled water and nonperishable food
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Blankets or sleeping bag

Despite its unpredictability, there is one thing that always remains true of the spring weather season: It always happens. If your home or business is damaged in a storm, you can depend on SERVPRO® of San Gabriel to get the cleanup and restoration process started fast.

Partial Fire Loss Can Leave Lingering Damage

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

A fire in your business can be overwhelming. Even if there is only a partial fire loss, the post effects of the fire and smoke damage can create long-term issues.

Seek Hidden Damage
Whether small or big, smoke, soot, and flames can quickly become absorbed into the materials of a building, even in areas not affected by the fire.

If a fire breaks out in a neighboring establishment, its residual impact may also affect your building. Calling SERVPRO San Gabriel a respected restoration specialist is the best bet to ensure the building is properly cleaned and inspected. During the inspection, they will check areas of the structure that may be overlooked, including:

HVAC System – Soot can easily begin to circulate through the vents. If not properly cleaned, it creates a long-term odor and affects air quality.

Electric and Plumbing – The accumulation of soot can also involve plumbing and electrical systems. The heat from a fire can impact pipes, potentially resulting in a pipe burst. If the fire was due to an electrical issue, it might be best to contact an electrician to update the wiring.

Mold – If a sprinkler system was set off or water hoses were used to put out a fire, it has the potential to create the right environment for mold. As the water absorbs into porous materials, mold can quickly grow and spread.

While fire loss can seem devastating, help is only a phone call away. We are here to help. 626-478-0286

Prevent Water Damage In Your Business

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Water is one of the most common causes of commercial and Home damage in the United States. Heavy rains, burst pipes and leaky plumbing can create a year-round problem causing significant water damage, if left unattended. There are a couple of steps you can take to mitigate water damage, but it is best to avoid it altogether by following these tips to prevent water damage.

1. Check Hoses and pluming.
Outdoor hoses that are left connected to water sources during the winter can freeze and cause ice blocks that may restrict water flow or cause a broken pipe. To avoid this problem, hoses should be drained and disconnected before winter weather arrives.

2. Know Where Your Water Main Shutoff Is and How To Operate It.
Your water main is responsible for supplying water to your entire house. One of the first things you should do when a water emergency, such as a broken pipe or an overflowing toilet, causes water in home is to close your water main shutoff.

3. Regular Maintenance of landscaping is critical.
Make sure any shrubs or trees that are too close to the property are removed because it can wrap around or grow into pipes which can lead to a leak or possibly a broken pipe.

Storm Season In California

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Spring and Summer bring sunshine and warmer weather to California, but also can also mean thunderstorms.

Its important to know the difference between a thunderstorm WATCH and a thunderstorm WARNING. A severe thunderstorm WATCH means a severe thunderstorm (damaging winds of 58 miles per hour or more, or hail three-fourths of an inch in diameter or greater) is likely to develop. A severe thunderstorm WARNING means that a severe thunderstorm has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

In California some severe storms can cause downed trees/power lines, flash flooding, lightning-related damage, hail and massive amount of debris on roads.

California Forest Fire Season

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

In recent years, we have experienced the smoke, ash, and flames from wild Fires.  We expect that in the future, wildfires will continue to be a problem for us here locally in Sothern California.

Strong winds and low relative humidity have caused wildfires to quickly erupt across California. Extended drought and high temperatures have led to drier than normal conditions across the area, further fueling the wildfires.

We would like to offer the following steps to help minimize additional harmful effects.

DO:

DON’T:

  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV sets, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water. They may have been contaminated.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Marijuana Grow House

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

Marijuana Plants Marijuana plants took over the entire home, SERVPRO of San Gabriel was called upon to clean up the aftermath! The homeowner was extremely pleased!

Though the sale and use of recreational marijuana has become legal in many states including CA, it’s safe to say that black market marijuana sales are thriving, with plants selling for $3,000 a pound depending on strain, or around $3 million per 1,000 plants. Private and cartel growers still find the manufacture and sale quite lucrative. With laws and enforcement diminishing, the clandestine manufacturing of marijuana is on the increase.

There is very little downside for these growers. With lax enforcement and penalties, coupled with the high cost of legitimately growing marijuana, many dispensaries will choose to buy from clandestine growers and avoid very high state imposed taxes. Also, growers can export their products to states where marijuana is not yet legal and can command a higher price per delivered pound.

How does your property get hijacked by illegal growers? Many often will pose as legitimate home renters. Once they have possession of your property they can convert a normal home into an efficient growing operation that can produce 3-4 harvest cycles per year.

Growers will convert every available space into a grow operation. From the outside of the property no one can tell if a grow operation is happening inside. Growers will choose to keep their activity during the late evening hours. Deliveries of supplies and material is done late at night. Unless discovered, grow houses can last for several years.

Once a grow house is discovered and shut down, what they leave behind is nearly total destruction to a property. SERVPRO San Gabriel has been a leader in the mitigation and post clean up at many illegal grow houses in Southern CA. We work with the homeowners who are left with the burden of repairing the property.

We have experience working with the homeowners and their respective insurance companies as they navigate this very complicated and complex claim procedure.

After tear out of damaged floor and drywall SERVPRO of San Gabriel technicians tore out water damaged floor and drywall

Old plumbing and leaky appliances around the house aren’t out to get you, but sometimes it seems that way. The weather plays a part too with winter freezes that burst pipes and spring rains that flood basements.

SERVPRO of San Gabriel cleanup and restoration teams have seen it all here in San Gabriel valley and the surrounding cities. his water emergency is confined to cold months, but you have to be prepared. In this Pasadena home a pipe burst causing flooding to the throughout the house.  Pipes can freeze and rupture in just a few hours, and the flooding can soak the house from ceiling to basement.

In most cases, the damage caused by a water pipe burst will make it easy to locate the section that needs repairs. However, it can be difficult to access the burst pipe if it’s in a wall or ceiling.

The section of the water pipe that bursts will need to cut out and replaced. Make sure that the new water pipe is properly in place and not leaking before proceeding with your restoration efforts.

While you can technically repair a burst water pipe at any stage of the water restoration process, it’s easiest to do once you have cleaned up the majority of the damage.

The Basics of Mold Remediation | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

If water damage occurs in a home or commercial property, there is a good chance that mold growth is likely to follow. In fact, mold begins growing within 48 hours of exposure to moisture.

Knowing your next steps when faced with a mold issue is very important, which is why we’re discussing mold remediation in this blog.

Why Mold Remediation?

You’ve probably seen ads for mold remediation and ads that promise mold removal, but mold removal is a fallacy. Removing all mold from a home or business is simply impossible. A qualified restoration company will focus on mold remediation, setting a goal for bringing mold levels back to a normal and natural range.

It is true that mold spores are a natural occurrence everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. They only create a problem when a minor mold issue is left untreated and then it turns into a major mold infestation.

During a mold remediation, the professional technicians isolate all contaminated areas, either by closing all doors and windows or completely and effectively sealing off all doorways and openings with a polyethylene sheeting, dependent on the level of remediation. Dust in the contaminated areas is then suppressed through misting.

Plastic bags are used to remove and discard wet and mold-damaged materials. All areas exposed to and affected by the mold are then thoroughly cleaned and dried. Sometimes, a HEPA vacuum will be used to help remove contamination and debris.

The mold area will then be treated with a biocide, and the technicians will leave it to sit overnight to allow it sufficient time to kill the mold spores. The following day, the mold remediation crew will return to encapsulate the affected area and beyond.

What to Do If You Suspect a Mold Issue

If you suspect your home or business may have a mold problem, you’ll want to act quickly. It is time to contact the professionals if, upon evaluation of the size of the problem, it is found that the mold has affected more than 10 square feet.

It is important that any professional company you hire be highly trained and certified in areas like:

  • Applied microbial remediation
  • Water damage restoration
  • Applied structural drying

Many home and business owners have successfully resolved some minor mold issues on their own, but the safest way is to always use a professional mold remediation company to get the quickest resolution to the problem.

At SERVPRO® of San Gabriel, our mold damage specialists are trained and certified experts in mold remediation. If your home or business is experiencing a mold issue, contact us to begin the mold remediation process.

The Causes and Prevention of Winter House Fires | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

As the days become shorter and the temperatures become lower, the number of house fire occurrences begin to increase.

Winter sees the highest number of house fires each year, with several season-specific factors contributing to their increase. By understanding what causes this increase, individuals can better prepare themselves to prevent it and have a safe cold-weather season.

Causes for the Increase in House Fires

An Increase in Cooking
The most common cause of house fires in America is repeatedly found to be cooking, and this holds true for the winter months as well. There are many more baked goods, elaborate meals and group-cooking events that occur in the winter, which are likely to contribute to this increase.

The Risk of Heaters
Imploring the use of extra heating methods in addition to a home’s central heat can save money, but it is important to take additional safety precautions in order to prevent the fire risk from increasing. Errors from heaters and fireplaces account for the second-highest amount of fires during the wintertime, so taking precautions are key.

Candles and Decorations
Decorations for the holiday season are a fun way to spread holiday cheer but can lead to fire hazards of their own. Electrical decor such as strings of lights should always be inspected for fraying or overheating. Candles, also common during the wintertime, should be treated with caution in case of the spreading of the open flame to other surfaces.

Prevention of Winter Fires

Understanding why winter fires occur is an important part of knowing how to prevent them. By utilizing these fire safety tips and exercising caution when cooking, warming and adding decor to your home, you will be able to stay safe all season:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away. We are leaders in restoration and can help you recover quickly after a fire occurs.

Electrical fire resulted into burnt down home in Arcadia, Ca. Luckily for the homeowner no one was in the home at the time of the fire. The fire began in the kitchen and spread throughout the rest of the first floor of the home. Household fires are extremely devastating especially if they aren't contained or dealt with quickly. The kitchen is the most common place for a fire to begin. Your stove and your oven are two big potential fire sources because they generate a lot of heat whether it be from gas or electricity. Some contributing factors that can trigger a kitchen fire are technical malfunctions, cleanliness, gas ovens and electrical ovens. In this case the fire was caused from a faulty socket that the stove was plugged into causing the circuit breaker to spark and ignite flames. SERVPRO of San Gabriel technicians worked thoroughly they came and cleaned up and removed affected area. The home owner couldn't be anymore pleased. His exact words where; "Thank you SERVPRO, thank you for servicing my home and leaving it as good as new. More beautiful than ever before."

Massive fire damage in El Monte, CA

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

One of the next most common causes of residential fires is electrical malfunction. Though it may seem like electrical malfunction is unavoidable, there are a number of bad habits that can be corrected to better your chances of escaping this catastrophe. Unfortunately for the residents of this El Monte apartment building this was definitely unavoidable. The cause of the fire still remains unknown, but after inspection it is seeming that it was more than likely a faulty cord or power socket. Here are tips to help avoid and or prevent electrical fires:

  • Make sure all electric outlets are "up to par," not loose, wired properly and covered when not in use
  • Make sure you never use a cable where the third ground prong has been removed
  • Never use extension cords as permanent solutions and make sure all permanent cords are in-tact and not frayed or damaged

Be aware and be careful and always make sure cords do not have wiring exposed prior to use.

Commercial water damage in Monterey Park

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

Although strong storms can inflict major structural damages, business owners should understand that inclement weather isn’t the only cause of floods and other water-related catastrophes. High levels of moisture, damaged sewer lines, plumbing leaks and other accidents can all result in severe commercial water damage.

If you are a business owner or manager, it’s smart to be aware of the different problems that can lead to indoor flooding and other water disasters. By familiarizing yourself with the four most common causes of commercial water damage you’ll be able to mitigate them properly before things get out of hand

1. Damaged Pipes and Plumbing

Your building’s plumbing system carries large volumes of water each day so if it gets damaged, you can expect water to flood into the workplace.

2. Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems

There’s no question that your sprinkler system will come in handy during a fire emergency. However, if the sprinklers are outdated, they can cause damage to your building.

3. Broken Appliances and Equipment

Water heaters, dishwashers, clothes washers, and many other appliances can experience problems that may cause them to leak.

4. Backed Up Toilets and Sewer Lines

Backed up sewer and toilet water contains a host of microbes and toxic substances that can cause health problems. Contaminated water can also ruin the quality of your belongings and pollute the air.

Leak caused by sewage line in Temple City, Ca

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

The sewage line in Temple city is backed up and resulted into excessive water damage to business office. A blockage can occur in a city sanitary main. If the blockage is not detected in time, sewage from the main can back up into homes and businesses through floor drains. Usually this happens slowly, giving the owner time to call a licensed plumber to assess the damage. If water is entering your basement at a rapid rate, call the city public works office and report the problem immediately so that a city operator can investigate. A sewer backup can lead to disease, destruction of your valuables, damage to your house or business, and can even result in electrical malfunctions. Prompt cleanup of the affected property can help minimize the inconvenience and prevent mold and further damage. In the event of sewer backup, immediately arrange for the cleanup of your property. SERVPRO of San Gabriel was contacted to clean and treat the affected areas throughout the office.

A Guide to Home Damages From Flooding | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Though flooding once was a concern only for those in low-lying regions, even other areas are now at risk due to the rising frequency of floods throughout the country. For homeowners, this means that making preparations is a wise choice no matter where you’re located.

Floods vary in type and severity, so the damage they can cause is variable as well. In an attempt to give homeowners an idea of what to expect, we’ve put together a guide for the most common types of damages that can result from flooding.

Flood Damage That Is Common in Homes

Foundational Damage. Your home’s foundation sits upon the soil below, meaning that soil can affect how sturdy it is. When a flood rolls through and oversaturates the ground below, it can cause the ground to shift and swell, leading to movement within the foundation.

Drywall Damage and Mold. Because of how well drywall can conceal a mold problem, experts recommend replacing any water-damaged drywall after a flood, even if it is fine in appearance.

Insulation Saturation. Most insulation can absorb water if the walls around it become soaked through, making it a prime spot for both water damage and mold growth. Some types of insulation are non-absorbent, so having a professional assess your damage is key.

Temporary Frame Swelling. The frame of a home is of solid construction, so as long as the foundation is stable, it generally will remain so as well. While the lumber may swell, once it is thoroughly dried out, it should return to its previous structural integrity.

Appliance Ruining. The appliances that trap heat or cold within them can become waterlogged due to the insulation they contain, but not every oven or freezer is built this way. Always get an expert opinion before using or throwing out appliances that have been impacted by a flood so you know what is safe.

Furniture Damage. While some furniture will survive a flood with a thorough cleaning, others might be better off being replaced due to health concerns. Typically materials such as solid wood and metal will be able to be salvaged, while pieces such as upholstery and mattresses might have to be tossed.

If your home has been affected by a flood, we’ll be here to help you! Give us a call 247 to learn about our certified flood restoration process.

SERVPRO of San Gabriel is well-prepared for this year's Santa Ana Winds. We are monitoring current wind trends arefully with you, our neighbors, and are ready to help in the event that any wind-related damage occurs.

A classic Santa Ana is formed when high pressure over the Great Basin causes dry air to flow out of the interior of the West in a clockwise rotation and enter Southern California from the northeast and move toward lower pressure off the coast.

The air speeds up as it squeezes through mountain passes and canyons, sometimes reaching ferocious speeds.

At the same time, the dryness causes relative humidity levels to plunge, often down to single-digit percentages, drying out living and dead vegetation and making it ready to burn.

Why do we call them Santa Ana winds?

The origin of the winds' name has never been settled, but most discussions mention Santa Ana Canyon in Orange County, southeast of Los Angeles.

How to Detect Hidden Water Damage | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding is sometimes the cause of water damage, but that is not always the case. Many mishaps can lead to water damage in the home, especially in hidden places that are not normally checked.

Discovering water damage is overwhelming and can be costly. For a typical water damage insurance claim, it will be over $6,000. Knowing how to detect this hidden water damage will assist homeowners in discovering it before it gets too severe.

Where to Look for Potential Water Damage
  • Check for water below windows. Where windows are joined with the wall can allow water to seep into the wood below over time, so it is important to check for watermarks.

  • Check siding joints. Where siding panels join—especially at corners—can be a prime spot for leaks to occur on the plywood below.

  • Inspect door thresholds. The metal plates of the threshold are not weather-sealed, allowing water to spread to the wood below. Inspect often to ensure the wood has not begun to swell.

  • Assess softness of exterior paint. Paint layered upon paint is not always properly sealed against the elements, allowing water to slip through. If it is soft to the touch, there might be water damage underneath.

  • Move the dishwasher. Dishwashers deal with a large volume of water, meaning they are primed for leaks. Moving the dishwasher out often is a great way to ensure there are no secret water spots.

  • Watch walls for discoloration. Water pipes run behind walls, and if you notice discoloration, that could indicate a leak.

  • Be sure the toilet is steady. A toilet’s seals grow weaker with age and can cause a leak so gradual that it goes unnoticed. However, a wobbly toilet might be indicative of flooring damage below.

If your home has suffered water damage (even in a hidden place like one of these), we are happy to help! Give us a call right away, and we’ll get there quickly.

So Cal bracing for 2nd round of Santa Ana Winds

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

The National Weather Service is giving the public advance notice that they might have to cope with a fresh round of Santa Ana winds. A high-pressure system begins to affect Southern California’s weather on Sunday.

The early forecast models indicate that high pressure will develop in the Great Basin over the weekend and could generate a Santa Ana wind event this week.

Last week Santa Ana's fanned several wildfires in Southern California, including the Saddleridge fire, which had charred nearly 8,000 acres in the Sylmar area through early Sunday evening.

Making matters worse, local power authorities have cut power to thousands of homes in potential fire areas to reduce the risk of fire caused by equipment failure. We are ready to assist any post-fire incident should they occur

Winds and available fuel increase risk of CA Fires

Five of California’s most destructive wildfires on record occurred in 2017.

In fact, 2017 is the costliest year on record for insurers with total U.S. wildfire peril totaling $16bn in losses. The full damage in California is estimated to be as high as $180bn in costs stemming from fire suppression to insurance and recovery expenditures.

California may not see a reprieve in the years to come. For the first time, the National Interagency Fire Center’s Predictive Outlook for 2018 is forecasting above-normal large fire potential due to the persistence of dry fuels, frequent offshore winds, and generally unfavorable weather

Preparing Your Business to Face Any Emergency Situation | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

9/19/2019 (Permalink)

What are some of the aspects of running a business that come to mind? There are a multitude of things that must be taken care of, but one of the most important factors to think about is emergency preparedness.

Creating an emergency preparedness plan isn’t going to make your business impervious to emergencies and disasters, but it does offer a sense of security for you and your employees when it comes to safety. Your employees will understand what to do and what is expected of them if a disaster or emergency situation should occur.

Create the Plans

Have you completed an emergency preparedness plan for various disaster situations? If not, may we suggest that you make it a priority and do so soon?

There are numerous emergencies your business should have a preparedness plan in place for, including:

  • Fire
  • Severe weather, including thunderstorms and winter storms
  • Other natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes
  • Human-caused hazards, including accidents or acts of violence
  • Technology-related issues like power outages and equipment failure

Emergencies, whether human-caused or from Mother Nature, can cause panic and chaos. If there is no emergency plan for your business, the situation could escalate and become even more stressful quickly.

You should make sure that safety training and familiarization of emergency preparedness plans are included in the company onboarding process, team-building activities and continuing education opportunities. By helping employees familiarize themselves with proper safety protocol and emergency procedures, you’re not only giving them the tools to protect themselves, but you are also setting them up to help protect guests/visitors and the business itself.

Start Here

As you look into beginning to set up an emergency plan for your business, you’ll first want to evaluate which scenarios are most likely to occur—and also consider even those that may be considered a longshot. After all, it’s better to be prepared for any worst-case scenario and not be caught by surprise.

You can find plenty of online resources to help guide you through this process, including Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the CDC.

Look into conducting a business impact analysis (BIA) to help predict the potential effect a disaster may have on your business. This would include lost or delayed sales and income, increased expenses from repairs, and delayed implementation of business plans. Don’t forget to make sure a crisis communications plan is in place, too.

Reviewing and practicing your emergency preparedness plan is paramount, so once you have come up with a plan, be sure to go over it and practice with employees. This will ensure the process remains fresh in their minds and can help employees feel more empowered and prepared in any sort of situation that could occur.

Disaster can strike when you least expect it, but by being prepared and having a plan in place, your business will be better suited to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store. If the worst should happen and your business is damaged, know that SERVPRO® of San Gabriel is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Creating a Natural Disaster Plan for Your Business | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

9/17/2019 (Permalink)

When everything from floods, hurricanes and tornadoes to wildfires and earthquakes happen, our businesses as well as our homes and families can be impacted. It is important to be prepared for these worst-case scenarios—and the key to this is advance preparation and planning.

Being prepared for those scenarios involves creating a natural disaster plan for your business. Some aspects to consider when designing that plan are discussed in this blog.

What to Take Into Consideration

There are many different factors you will need to consider when building a disaster plan for your business. This includes your employees as well as your assets such as equipment and merchandise.

Some of those considerations to include should be:

  1. How to safely protect your employees
  2. How to secure your assets
  3. How to get business up and running again

There have been many checklists made available to us by sources like the Red Cross, FEMA and Ready.gov that will help you identify areas that need to be included in your natural disaster preparedness plan. These sources will also show you just how unprepared you could be.

Employee Safety Is Vital

Because disaster often strikes without warning, it’s important to have a plan that lays out procedures and safety measures for employees and visitors. Make sure evacuation routes and exits from your facility are all clearly and visibly marked, provide an area where employees can take shelter when necessary, consider installing emergency lighting, and have designated staff “safety wardens” that are properly trained and ready to assist in all emergency efforts.

When you identify a shelter space, a basement or storm cellar is the ideal location in the event of tornadoes or other high-wind situations. Choose a small interior room or closet or interior hallway if you have no basement space.

Protect the Assets

If you have a brick and mortar location for your business, that does not mean your assets inside are fully protected. You’ll have to make mindful choices about how to protect them.

Be sure to have a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of these items and, if possible, having photographs prior to a disaster whenever possible is always helpful for the insurance claim process. If your assets are based on a computer server, take the steps necessary to ensure that the backup system is regularly performing backups and that the storage system cannot be damaged.

If you own your building, take some time and talk with a contractor to locate areas that could be improved on with regard to structural integrity. This contractor can also walk you through possible safety upgrades and identify any areas that may not meet codes for certain weather situations. .

Back to Business

In the unfortunate event a natural disaster does occurs, it is highly likely that, due to damage, your business will have to shut down while repairs are being made. Every day you remain closed is another day of lost profits. Set up a special “rainy day” fund that will be available to use should you incur additional costs that are not covered by your insurance.

It is a good idea to compile a list of contractors who will be available for any construction concerns or repairs and to find a company that specializes in cleanup and restoration service that will be available to quickly respond to your emergency situation.

With SERVPRO® of San Gabriel, you can count on us to get to the disaster faster and make it “Like it never even happened.” Our training and expertise have prepared us to help with water damage, storm damage, fire damage and mold remediation quickly and effectively.

Knowing what to do when disaster strikes your business is of the utmost importance. When it comes to the cleanup and restoration aspects, depend on SERVPRO® of San Gabriel to be there for you.

Ideas for Protecting Your Home From Water Damage | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

9/17/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage from a pipe bursting, a malfunctioning appliance or even storm damage is one of the most common and costliest disasters a homeowner can face.

But while water damage is common, it’s also preventable in many cases. Let’s take a look at some ways to safeguard your home:

Ways to Protect Your Home

Not only is water damage a hassle to deal with, but it can have a long-term impact on your home further down the road. Mold is one of the most common side effects of water damage, as mold can begin to grow and flourish within 48 hours of exposure to moisture.

When thinking about ways to protect your home, try to break it down by areas of impact. Those areas could include basements, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and ceilings to start out.

Basement water damage is often cause by water seepage. You can help prevent that happening by resealing areas in the basement where water could sneak in, making sure water drains away from your home and installing a backwater valve.

Your kitchen and bathrooms can experience water damage because of plumbing issues and appliance failures.

To protect your home against that, be sure you:

  • Inspect all appliances regularly, watching for issues with hoses and faucets
  • Check the seal and caulking around your showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight
  • Know where the main shut-off valve is in your home
  • Don’t leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running

As much as you would like to protect your possessions in your home from water damage, it is not always possible, but there are ways you can at least decrease the amount of damage and loss. Using waterproof bins to store items is recommended, as is keeping items stored on shelving off of the floor—which is advisable when using your basement for storage.

What to Do if Water Damage Happens

In the unfortunate event your home does experience a water damage situation, you can stand a good chance of salvaging items that can be dried out within 48 hours.

Contact your insurance company immediately, evaluate the extent of the water damage to your home and identify the type of water that is involved.

Here are the types of water involved in a water damage situation:

  1. “Clean” water. This could be from rain, condensation, leaky pipes, etc.

  2. “Gray” water. This is slightly dirty water from dishwashers, washing machines, clean toilets, etc.

  3. “Black” water. This is water from sewage or serious flooding from nearby rivers, etc. This water can cause serious health problems.

Following a water damage disaster, you should remove wet objects, dehumidify and dry your home out quickly, and be sure to disinfect remaining materials.

Pro tip: By freezing your wet books, photos and papers in a frost-free freezer, you will allow yourself some extra time to take care of them. This prevents mold and mildew from developing and causing more deterioration. Once able, you can remove them from the freezer and air-dry or fan-dry the pages.

What Can Be Damaged by a Lightning Strike? | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

A thunderstorm dispels electrical energy by casting lightning bolts, which are some of the most violent examples of a thunderstorm’s power.

By causing wiring damage, ruining electronics and causing structural damage, there are quite a few things that can be damaged in the event of a lightning strike. For homeowners, it is wise to make a point to understand how lightning happens and what it can damage in order to take action after a storm has passed.

From an Electrical Charge to a Lightning Bolt

Thunder and lightning are a direct result of an electrical charge within the weather front, something all thunderstorms contain. When some of this energy is expelled by the storm, we see that as a lightning bolt and hear the thunder that is a result of the waves it produces.

When this energy is dispelled, the bolt will either dart across the clouds or toward the ground, where it will often strike an object on its way. This is the reason that lightning can be so hazardous to homes because it will route through electrical wires and cause havoc.

Things to Inspect After a Lightning Strike

After a lightning bolt strikes on or near your home, it is important to inspect the following, which are routine damages lightning causes:

1. Electrical wiring. Lightning bolts reach temperatures of around 500,000 degrees. They can not only ignite buildings on impact, but they can also damage the wiring as they travel toward the ground, increasing the likelihood of a future electrical fire. Local fire marshals or electricians can often perform tests to assess the damage.

2. Appliance function. The charge lightning transfers to a home’s wires is powerful enough to travel up power cords and ruin any electronic device that’s plugged into the wall without a surge protector. After a storm, check all the electronics in the house to see if they are operational.

3. Foundation and structure. Thunder is created by shock waves when lightning strikes, but these can also occur when lightning hits the ground. These waves have been known to crack foundations and explode chimneys, so survey your home thoroughly after a storm.

If your home has been affected by storm damages or lightning-related fires, give us a call today! We are experts in damage cleanup and can restore your damage quickly.

Looking Into What Causes Water Damage | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

Water is necessary for life, this we know, but one aspect that is not necessary is water damage.

Are you aware of all the different sources of water damage that could impact your home?

How It Happens

The Travelers Companies Inc. reported that between 2009 and 2015, five of the main reasons for homeowner claims were:

  • exterior wind damage
  • non-weather-related water damage
  • hail
  • weather-related water damage
  • theft

Did you notice that water damage cracked that top five list twice? The types of water damage are broken down into two different categories, the result of weather situations or the result of non-weather situations.

Water damage that is not caused by weather occurs most often in the home and is the result of plumbing and appliance malfunction issues. Water damage caused by weather can cause just as big of headache but does not occur as often. Weather-related water damage is caused by events such as rain, snow or melting ice.

In your home, the top five causes of water damage are:

  • Issues caused by malfunctioning plumbing
  • Leaks from washing machine
  • Damaged water pipes
  • Water heaters that are up there in years
  • Weather situations
You Can Prevent the Damage

Water damage repair costs can break the budget, but it could be more if you do not have the proper homeowners insurance coverage. It is wise to double-check your homeowners insurance policy to make sure that you have the proper coverage, because in many situations, the following may be covered in a standard policy:

  • Damage that is the result of ice, snow or sleet weight
  • Any water that is an overflow situation, even accidental
  • Faulty pipes that could be cracking or bulging in a steam or hot water heat system
  • Frozen pipes and plumbing

There are ways to miss out on some types of water damage incidents and avoid the headaches that accompany the damage.

Use preventive measures and make sure to perform routine maintenance to protect your home from water damage. Some ways to do this include installing water sensors and automatic shut-off valves, asking a professional plumber to install back flow valves and standpipes in basement drains, and keeping your appliances and personal belongings up off the floor in the basement.

By adhering to these suggestions, there is a good possibility that you can dodge the bullet where water damage is concerned.

Water damage can be a nightmare to deal with, but fortunately, you will always have SERVPRO® of San Gabriel on your side to help with the cleanup and restoration process.

Tips for Protecting Your Home From Wind Damage | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

8/30/2019 (Permalink)

Many concerns arise with severe storms, including the threat of damaging winds. These winds, which can occur without warning, can cause long-term structural impacts.

Things to be Concerned With

Tornadoes and hurricanes are not the only storms to cause damaging winds. Basically, damaging winds are considered those with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph and can be brought on by a strong thunderstorm.

You will often hear these damaging winds referred to as “straight-line” winds, which differentiates them from the damage caused by winds from tornadoes.

Damage from these winds can be destructive, sometimes causing loose objects to become projectiles. Windows and the roof can bear the brunt of this damage, and if extensive damage occurs, it can also result in water damage to the home as the outside elements come indoors through damaged windows and roofs.

Living in a thunderstorm-prone area can put you at risk from damaging winds. Some structures are especially at risk. For example, mobile homes, even those that are anchored, can sustain damage with wind gusts over 80 mph.

Tips to Help Protect From Wind Damage

There are a number of ways you can help protect your property from damaging winds, some of which are listed below, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Have a professional reinforce your garage door.

  • Remove or anchor loose objects on your property that could be moved or tossed by the wind, especially trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Have a professional remove large or dying trees and branches that could fall on your home.

Not all high wind circumstances come with advanced warning, as we all know, but some of these action items can be taken care of for that “just in case” logic.

Also, if you are building a new home or renovating an older home, be sure the windows, walls and doors meet the building code for your area.

If your home has been hit by damaging winds and resulting water damage, the highly-trained specialists at SERVPRO® of San Gabriel are here to help with the cleanup and restoration of your home.

Identifying Fire Hazards in the Home

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Who wants to think about the possibility of seeing their home damaged by fire? Unfortunately, it’s a harsh reality for too many Americans.

One way you can protect your home is to understand fire hazards and know how to identify them. In this blog, we’ll be discussing two of the most common household fire hazards.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, over a five-year period from 2011 to 2015, fire departments in the United States answered approximately 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles. These were responsible for a total of 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

When burning a candle, be sure it’s safely kept at least one foot away from anything flammable and is in a sturdy holder that won’t easily tip over. Never use a candle where oxygen is used in the home and always blow all candles out before leaving a room or going to sleep.

Candles were a cause of 2 percent of home fires, with 3 percent resulting in death and 7 percent resulting in injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day during those five years, with December the prime time of the year for home candle fires.

Of all the candle fires during this time span, 37 percent started in bedrooms and were responsible for 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries.

While cooking may be the leading cause of home fires, smoking is the leading cause of home fire deaths. In 2014, an estimated 17,200 home structure fires caused by smoking were reported. Those fires resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage, per the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes.

Douse all cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand prior to throwing them out, and keep in mind that one out of four fatal victims from smoking-related fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

If you’re a smoker, it is safest to smoke outside, as most deaths result from fires that start in living rooms, family rooms or bedrooms. Fire-safe cigarettes are a great option—and a deep, sturdy ashtray should be used.

<h4are-lesser-known-fire-hazards-to-watch-for">Here Are Lesser-known Fire Hazards to Watch For

While candles and smoking are two of the most common causes of home structure fires, there are also other lesser-known hazards that could be present in your home.

Did you know that there is glassware you may have in your home that could actually pose a fire risk? When sunlight passes through them, the concentrated ray could ignite flammable materials. It’s best to move glass accessories away from windows.

Also, look out for loose outlets in your home. Movement of these electrical outlets could loosen wires connected to the outlet and create dangerous arcing.

Dust bunnies are also a fire risk when collecting near electrical sockets and floor heaters. Sweeping or vacuuming your floors regularly and cleaning hard-to-reach areas like behind entertainment systems can help prevent buildup.

Fire, smoke and water damage can be devastating to homes, including the damage caused by firefighting efforts. SERVPRO® of San Gabriel has your back and is here to help restore your home to pre-fire condition.

3 Fire Safety Basics for the Whole Family | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Were you aware that every year in the United States, more than 350,000 house fires occur, amounting to more than $5.5 billion in property damage? These fires are also responsible for almost 3,000 deaths and another 10,000 injuries.

Advance preparation is your best defense against a fire. The importance of every person in your family knowing how to prevent fires and how to respond if they occur cannot be understated.

Start by teaching your kids basic fire safety guidelines early in their life. Take a look, as a family, at three fire safety suggestions you can practice:

Include Your Family in Fire Safety Planning

Plans should be in place in the event of a fire. Every family member needs to know that plan and what to do. This includes how to get out of the house and a safe place to meet once they’ve gotten out.

But don’t just create a plan and stop there.

Conduct fire drills on a regular basis. Practice makes perfect. This helps everyone remember the plan if an actual fire breaks out.

Catch Fire Hazards

Would you be surprised if you were to take a look through your home and found fire hazards? Be sure to look through every room as well as your outdoor space checking for hazards.

  • Appliances should be in good working condition.
  • Electrical cords should not be frayed or damaged.
  • Outlets and/or extension cords should not be “maxed out.”
  • Proper wattage light bulbs should be used in light fixtures.
  • Electrical wiring should not covered up by rugs or carpet.
Practice Kitchen Fire Safety

Did you know cooking is one of the major causes of house fires? That’s why it’s important to be cautious in the kitchen.

All cooks should follow basic cooking safety rules:

  • Never cook when tired or distracted.
  • Kids and teens need to be supervised when they cook.
  • Keeping a lid nearby when cooking with grease on the stove helps in the event of a grease fire. Should a small grease fire occur, use the lid to cover and smother it.
  • Turn the oven off and do not open the door if the oven catches fire.
  • If a kitchen fire is spreading, immediately leave the room, closing the door.

If your family has experienced a fire and needs help restoring your home, SERVPRO® of San Gabriel can help! Give us call to learn about our fire restoration services and what we can do for you.

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes your home or business, time becomes an especially precious commodity. When it is your home or livelihood on the line, you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help—you need it right away.

Nobody understands a fast response like we do, which is why responding faster to any size disaster is more than just a slogan to us.

When it’s your belongings or business on the line, time is not a luxury you have regarding disaster cleanup. This becomes especially true when water damage is involved in the disaster through events that involve flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and water damage after a fire.

The walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings are fast casualties of water. Mere minutes is all it takes for water to spread throughout your property and saturate everything that is in its path.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Within only 48 hours and up to a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

Water damage that is left to stand for over a week leads to a much higher costs and restoration times, and it can impact structural safety.

Must-Have Qualities in a Restoration Company | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

8/23/2019 (Permalink)

Any property being damaged in a natural disaster is unfortunate, but for business owners, it can cause their whole livelihood to be put on the line. After a disaster, over 40% of businesses are unable to resume operations, as reported by FEMA.

Making sure your business will recover requires some planning, including picking a commercial restoration company to work with to repair the damage. Here are some must-have qualities to seek out when you are choosing a company:

1. A Solid Emergency Plan

After a natural disaster, the speed of response can make a big difference in the extent of the damage. Damage that is left untreated can compound, meaning more time and expense will be required to repair it. A company with a comprehensive emergency response plan will keep costs and project timelines to a minimum by getting there faster.

This philosophy is why we implemented a 24-hour response line. By being able to take action as soon as damages are reported, we can let business owners focus on other things they need to do to reopen.

2. A Solid Team of Technicians

The way technicians are trained has quite a bit to do with the quality of their work. By choosing a company that invests heavily in its team, you will have peace of mind that the quality of service will be top-notch.

We train our technicians in compliance with the standards set forth by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). We also put a strong emphasis on continued education by providing online learning courses and employee certifications, so learning does not stop when training does.

3. A Solid Fleet of Equipment

Having the right tools for the job makes a big difference, especially when commercial restoration is the job in question. Select a company with an up-to-date fleet of equipment in order to ensure you are getting the best tools for your restoration job.

The IICRC standards for restoration equipment are what we use to determine what tools we use—whether we are removing water or scrubbing harmful chemicals from the air, we take advantage of the technological advancements that allow us to do our job better.

If you’re in need of commercial restoration, do not hesitate to make the call so you can get your business back faster. Our trained experts are here to help 24/7—contact us today.

Actions to Take for House Fire Prevention | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

House fires are dangerous and damaging, but most are not aware of just how widespread they are

House fires are dangerous and damaging, but most are not aware of just how widespread they are—and how preventable. While there are no guaranteed ways to ensure a house fire will never occur, there are ways to lessen the chances.

Statistics About House Fire Frequency

The regularity that house fires occur is alarming—the NFPA reports that a fire is called in over twice every 60 seconds.

Because many people cook with gas stoves each day, it is logical that the number one cause of residential fires is cooking. Unfortunately, there are many other things to be wary of surrounding house fires.

Actions for House Fire Prevention

Flames can spread rapidly once they begin, which is why it is best to stop them from occurring in the first place. These actions you can take to prevent house fires will keep flames from starting and growing out of control:

Battery tests for smoke detectors. It only takes a moment to test your smoke alarm batteries via the button on the unit. It is recommended that a test is performed every month.

Clearing the tray of the dryer. Though they are an everyday appliance, dryers can be a fire hazard as well. As they heat up, lint in the dryer tray can spark and catch fire if not cleared out.

Being careful of open flames. Even if a fire starts out contained, such as for cooking or heat, it can easily jump to other surfaces if the conditions are right. It is recommended to never leave open flames unattended, no matter for how short of a time.

Checking cables. Any cable that carries electricity can become a fire hazard if frayed or worn. Check cords often for signs of wear and replace if necessary.

Proper household chemical storage. A surprising amount of things under the kitchen sink can be highly flammable. Check the labels of each product for storage instructions and keep combustible materials away from heat.

If your home has suffered damage from a house fire, give us a call. We are certified in fire and soot remediation, and here to help 247.

Flood Damage Precautions for Your Home | SERVPRO® of San Gabriel

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

Think flooding is unlikely to damage your home? You may want to think again.

In 90% of natural disasters some form of flooding is involved. Therefore, it is important for homeowners to stay knowledgeable about what their risks are and how they should prepare for them.

Precautions Against Flood Damage to Your Household

For homeowners, limiting the damage a flood can cause is possible with some advanced precautions around the house:

Get an accurate representation of risk. Use the FEMA Flood Map Tool or call the local branch of your emergency management office to better understand your risk and the precautions to take.

Have a chat about actions in case of emergency. Make sure your entire family is aware of the procedure by discussing a disaster plan and evacuation route with everyone. Show all adults and older children where to turn off the electricity and gas mains in the house—and keep emergency supplies handy.

Elevate chemicals away from water. Chemicals that you keep around your house are fine in bottles, but pose an extreme risk when mixed with floodwaters. Antifreeze, oils and bleaches should be elevated out of the water’s way.

Ensure tanks of propane and fuel are secured. A tipped fuel tank is a recipe for disaster, and even a full one can be moved when floodwaters are rushing. Anchor them securely to avoid this risk.

Cut electricity to any affected rooms. Even if you feel it’s unlikely that the waters would reach electrical appliances or outlets, having live electricity near floodwaters can still be dangerous. Shut off the electrical breaker to any rooms that are at-risk for a flood.

Store valuables in a safe space. Items considered irreplaceable, such as family memorabilia, tax records and household documents, should be digitized and the physical copies kept off-site or in a waterproof safe.

Keeping your family and your home out of harm’s way is of chief concern in the event of a flood that is imminent. Homeowners can take steps like these to lessen their risk and protect their belongings and their loved ones in the event of a disaster.

If you’ve experienced flood damage or water damage from other causes, SERVPRO® of San Gabriel is here to help. Our technicians are fully trained in water remediation, and our 247 Emergency Line means we’ll be there for you when you call.

Because every fire damage event is different, our highly trained team will develop a unique solution that is tailored to your needs; however, the general process remains the same.

Here are the steps that are included in our process:

1. Emergency contact. When you make your initial contact with us, you will be asked a series of questions regarding the fire damage. This helps us make sure our team is dispatched with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Fire Safety Tips for Your Business

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding the 3 Water Classifications

2/28/2019 (Permalink)

Water that is involved with water damage is classified into three different categories: clean, gray and black, so it is not safe to think that all water is the same. Gaining a better understanding of the differences in these types of water can also help you understand how to better handle a water damage situation.

Whatever the type of water that is involved in water damage, there will most assuredly be a cleanup and restoration process to follow. To begin the process, the most important thing to do is remove all of the moisture and damp items quickly, so that mold will not begin to flourish in its ideal environment.

Clean Water

“Clean” water is free of contaminants and is not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health, much like its name infers. This water can come from:

  • Broken water lines
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Toilet holding tanks
  • Snow melt and rainwater

Cleanup will be the easiest for damage from this type of water damage since there are fewer microbes living in the water. But after a 48-hour period and contact with the surfaces of buildings, clean water can change to category two, which is gray water.

Gray Water

“Gray” water is where water damage cleanup and restoration can become a bit more complicated. It may pose a health risk due to chemical or biological contamination. That slight contamination in gray water means that it will have to be properly and thoroughly treated before safe consumption.

Gray water is a product of dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Also, the 48-hour exposure time applies here as well, with gray water turning into black water if not treated.

Black Water

“Black” water presents a hazard and is the most serious of the three classifications because it is considered highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter. This includes floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage carries with it contamination caused by microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more—many of these can be harmful to humans.

Diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

  • Cholera
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis
  • Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

For your safety, assume that all floodwaters are black water since it will pick up contaminants as it makes its way along its path.

All floodwater classifications are recognized by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Remediation Certification (IICRC), which is an organization that certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. Our technicians all study IICRC standards and best practices in water restoration and are available to help determine the steps to take to get your home back to normal.

It doesn’t matter what type of water has caused damage to your home or business, SERVPRO® of San Gabrielis here to help get the situation under control and make it "Like it never even happened." Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need emergency cleanup and restoration services!

Water Damage Could be Caused by These Plumbing Issues

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Severe weather is usually one of the first things that comes to mind when many think of water damage.

Yes, storms and flooding can cause catastrophic water damage, but they are often not the main culprits. Various items in your home can also be responsible for creating many situations that result in water damage.

<h4damage-is-a-common-homeowners-insurance-claim:58a1bc41e6cb8546d7fc3be59ee7afd5">Water Damage Is a Common Homeowners Insurance Claim

<h4damage-culprits-in-your-home:58a1bc41e6cb8546d7fc3be59ee7afd5">Water Damage Culprits in Your Home

The Basics of Mold Remediation

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Creating a Natural Disaster Plan for Your Business

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

With SERVPRO® of San Gabriel, you can count on us to get to the disaster faster and make it "Like it never even happened." Our training and expertise have prepared us to help with water damage, storm damage, fire damage and mold remediation quickly and effectively.

Knowing what to do when disaster strikes your business is of the utmost importance. When it comes to the cleanup and restoration aspects, depend on SERVPRO® of San Gabriel to be there for you.

Making Sure Your Family Is Prepared for Severe Weather

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing for severe weather is always a good idea. Even though we may have advanced warning for some types of severe weather, there are also those occasions where severe weather can catch us off-guard.

Fortunately, there are things you can do and safety tips to follow that will ensure your family is prepared for any type of severe weather occurrences.

Creating a Family Emergency Plan

An important way to stay ahead of the weather is to have an established family emergency plan put together and ready.

If you have already established an emergency plan with your family, make sure that it is reviewed and discussed regularly, especially at the beginning of the various weather seasons so that everyone knows exactly what to do.

If there is not a family emergency plan in place for your family, here are some things to take into consideration when creating it:

1. The Importance of Emergency Alerts

Fortunately, it is easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone thanks to technology today. Alerts and warnings are literally “at your fingertips” if you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, which allows for valuable time in severe weather situations. Radio and television also still broadcast warnings and alerts.

2. Establishing a Storm Shelter

Living in an area where tornadoes are common means you’ll want to seek shelter in the lowest part of your home, preferably a basement if you have one. If there is no basement, find an interior room on the lowest level that is away from windows and doors. There are other reasons a storm shelter is needed besides tornadoes, and by visiting ready.gov, you can learn more about those situations.

3. Planning Evacuation Routes

Put together a map of various evacuation routes and keep it handy in the event of hurricanes, floods or fires. which can force you out of your home in a hurry. Multiple routes are wise to have just in case one is impassable, and be sure to account for your pets and find out if there are places to stay with them along your route.

4. Communication in Severe Weather

Reliance on cell phones today is the common form of communication, but cell phone towers can be damaged during storms and batteries will die when there is no power to recharge them. Your family will need an emergency communication plan in place. Also, designate a safe meeting place for your family, so that you can all meet there if separated.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO® of San Gabriel to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

How to Prepare for Flooding and Storm Damage

10/8/2018 (Permalink)

The Storm Damage Caused by Hurricanes

9/24/2018 (Permalink)

Pacific hurricanes aren’t as common as Atlantic hurricanes, but they are known to happen. In August this year, Hawaii was hit by Hurricane Lane. The state of California and the mild Los Angeles County climate may be generally safe from hurricanes, but if you travel to the East Coast or the Gulf Coast or even Hawaii then the odds rise. It’s always important to be prepared.

While hurricanes tend to get the most coverage, they are actually only one of ten common storm types in the United States.

Hurricanes, although more common in some areas than others, reach far past the coast they occur on.Hurricane Sandy affected over 20 states.

Because hurricanes cause so much damage, it’s important to be knowledgeable about them even if they aren’t common to California.

Wind Damage

Warm and humid conditions may also increase chances of mold; according to moldpedia, mold growth expedites above 70F.

There are many ways we can prevent mold growth in the common household, like keeping humidity and condensation level low by keeping different living areas ventilated. Another way we can prevent mold growth is by checking for water leaks. If you are not sure if your pipes are leaking, you can call us to do an inspection for you. Preventing Fire

Preventing Fire

SERVPRO of San Gabriel specializes in Fire Mitigation as well as Fire Restoration. Fire damage is a homeowner's biggest worry. In the modern world we have endless appliances to assist our daily living; however, they also pose a great danger if not properly maintained or applied. Here are some common causes of fire as explained by Traveler's Ins.

Alternative Heating Sources May Also Create a Fire Hazard. Do not place a space heater near furniture, curtains or other objects that could easily catch fire. Clothes Dryers Are Another Common Source of House Fires. Clean out the dryer vent regularly. Clean out the lint filter after each load. Lint may also collect under and behind your dryer, so do not forget to clean these areas. Carelessness in the Kitchen May Also Lead to a House Fire. Keep a kitchen fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it. Keep your stove and oven clean. Built up food splatter or grease can later ignite when the stove or oven is turned on for cooking. Faulty Wiring and Outlets Are One of the Top Causes of House Fires. Check the electrical cords throughout your home for signs of fraying, and replace all frayed wires.

Drying-Machines

7/9/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of San Gabriel is a professional water restoration company, and we specialize in mold remediation, and water mitigation. One strategy we use for drying the common household is by placing machines in the contained area to create conditions that will both filter the air and dehumidify the effected area. The three machines that we most commonly use are Air Movers, Dehumidifiers, and Negative-Air Scrubber.

After mold is physically removed from its source, the air should be cleaned of airborne mold spores using HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) air scrubbers and air exchange (i.e. replacing dirty moldy air with clean fresh air through simple ventilation or more sophisticated negative air controls for bigger jobs). Since mold excels in humid, damp areas, we will lower the humidity level of the effected area with the dehumidifier, while the Air Mover is constantly blowing at the wet materials, so that the water molecules will be released into the air, to be sucked in by the dehumidifier. The air-scrubber is to 'scrub' the air. It will filter through all the mold spores and other pollutants that may still be in the air.

San Gabriel Valley Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your San Gabriel Valley Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of San Gabriel will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does Your San Gabriel Valley Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

In San Gabriel, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
